Urgent Call
ARAI is an authority appointed by the Government to test and approve all automotive vehicles in India. The primary function is to evaluate safety, fuel efficiency, durability etc. of all aspects of automobiles.
Till 2016, all "non-drive" components of an automobile, such as Car Radio, Music system, Navigators, Immobilizer, Infotainment systems etc. were treated as accessories and not evaluated as a part of the vehicle.
Thereafter, new rules were implemented, wherein, these accessories, IF ( and only if) prefitted by the vehicle manufacturer , will be separately evaluated by the AED division of ARAI independently under the following standards.
AIS-004 : For Car Radio, Navigation system, Infotainment etc. Including tracking devices when not used for fleet control or public transport.
AIS-076 : For Anti-theft Alarm systems and Immobilizer
AIS-140: Intelligent Transport System and Tracking devices
So when the automobile company offers the vehicle to ARAI , and if the vehicle has such prefitted Car Radio, Music system, Navigators, Immobilizer etc. , then ARAI will ask the manufacturer to submit a report issued by their AED. Since these accessories are almost always out sourced from other supplier ( like Continental, Panasonic, etc.) , the car manufacturer will usually want their supplier to get the devices tested by AED ; They also have the option testing it themselves , which will be the case if these items are manufactured in-house.
To sum up, ARAI testing by AED under AIS-004,140,076 is required for prefitted accessories. It is not required for accessories that are sold in the open market, which the vehicle owner installs on his own.
Depending on the type of product, we can perform tests as per BIS, MTCTE, ARAI and WPC as per applicability. With a few products being applicable under BIS, few under MTCTE, along with WPC approval to be required in case of wireless capabilities of the product.
We are currently working on widening our scope for new avenues as well, this includes software security testing and 5G end-user devices testing as well.
